Boxing World

From WBC President Jose Sulaiman: “The World Boxing Council has decided to withdraw recognition of super welterweight world champion Francisco Javier Castillejo with more than two-thirds of the votes of the Board of Governors.

Castillejo did not comply with his obligation to fight mandatory challenger Ricardo Mayorga and signed a contract to fight another boxer, violating the WBC commitment that he, as champion, had to comply with.

Guidelines welcome

Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger has finally shown his cards.

The governor's office issued a proclamation last week laying out a policy on Indian gaming that formalizes his opposition to urban gambling and should slow down the "reservation shopping" that could threaten to bring Las Vegas-style gambling to the Bay Area, possibly even Solano County.

The governor said he will oppose proposals for tribal land acquisitions in urban areas when the plan is to use the land for casinos.

The Democratic mayor has called the April 29th photo shoot at the Palms hotel-casino "classy."

Championship leader Fernando Alonso stayed out of the limelight on Friday ahead of a home Spanish Grand Prix that promises another epic battle with Ferrari's Michael Schumacher.

Opening practice saw thousands of fans filling the main grandstand, a far more impressive turnout than the sparse crowd on race day at what turned out to be a thrilling San Marino Grand Prix at Imola two weeks ago.

Vegas, a winning destination

Thanks to Allegiant Air, the Sin City now is a weekend destination for us in the Ozarks.

And I was one of those who boarded the airline's inaugural flight on April 21 to explore Las Vegas.

Free champagne was offered, T-shirts given away and drawings held for freebies, including several round-trip tickets.

I didn't win anything, but who was not a winner when the round-trip fare cost as low as $128?

"The buses, made by the firm Transbus, the largest bus builder in Britain, cost about $560,000 apiece, according to the commission.
